You booked a shoot and now you’re thinking — “omg, what do my kids and I wear?”
Family photo planning should not be complicated and after reading this you will have the main things to avoid when picking your outfits 🤍
First and most important — comfort is everything. Your outfits have to allow you to move freely. If you can’t run, jump, spin or sit on the grass without worrying about your clothes — it’s not the right outfit for a family shoot. For all family sessions I suggest avoiding heels and anything tight so you can move naturally and actually interact with your kids the way you normally would.
Outfits are 30% of what makes photos turn out great. Your clothes have to be cohesive with the location and the overall style of the photographer you chose. A flowy linen outfit hits differently in a field than it does in an urban setting — and that’s exactly the kind of thing worth thinking about before the day.
A few things to avoid: Bright colours, bold patterns and logos. These have a tendency to pull attention away from the people in the photo and work against the overall cohesiveness of the look. The goal is for people to see YOUR family — not your shirt.
Now let’s talk about what actually works. My absolute favourite colour palette for family sessions is muted tones, black and white. These colours keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on you and your family. Nothing too flashy, nothing too loud. Just beautiful, timeless and cohesive 🤍
